PhD Studentship: Multi-scenario modelling of the failure process in cementless total hip replacement

A PhD studentship is now available within the Bioengineering Research Group, School of Engineering Sciences (SES), which will fully cover University tuition fees (at EU/UK level**) and provide a tax-free bursary of £12,600 per year, rising annually in line with the UK Government (EPSRC) recommended rate, for a three-year duration.
** EU/UK fees £3240 p.a. (subject to increase), overseas fee £13250 p.a. (subject to increase). Overseas applicants will need to find the fees difference of £10,010.
Failure is a multi-factor process, but at present we simulate failure mechanisms in isolation, for instance wear or generation of a fibrous tissue layer at the bone-implant interface. We would like to try and take a more systems level approach to modelling. As a trial, we would like to try and simulate the combined processes of fibrous tissue formation and ingress of wear debris at the bone implant interface. To do this we will take a multi-physics approach. Using our existing FE models, we will attempt to predict the formation of the fibrous tissue layer at the bone-implant interface. At various time points, we will then perform CFD to predict wear particle ingress along any debonded interfaces.
Although this will primarily be a computational based project, it will involve some experimental work. In particular, using an idealised hip stem set-up, it should be possible to monitor the ingress of debris experimentally and use this data to validate our computational model of fluid flow.
