It may be of interest for BIOMCH-L readers, during the Christmas time, to
be aware of the research expeditions in Antarctica.
The research program titled "Human biology and medicine" is one of the six
main programs proposed by current collaborative research between
the Antarctic Division Polar Medicine Branch and international research
groups including the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
This research aims to increase the knowledge of the effects of the Antarctic
environment ( arguably the most isolated on earth ) on Australian National
Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) personnel. The research, having
a close nexus with health care, should improve the efficiency of Antarctic
operations and contribute to human activities in other remote and hostile
environments. Studies of thermal stress and energy balance in the human
body are only some examples.
If you wish to receive more information about these programs please
