Could either Richard or Michael explain the difference between a functional
method and a kinematic fitting method? Does the fitting method eliminate the
need for separate range of motion (ROM) trials?
There was a paper not long ago showing that the functional hip center was not
very accurate when using limited ROM data, or when using actual gait data
(Steve Piazza et al, J Biomech). Is this a concern, especially for patients
who have a limited ROM?
Richard reported improved repeatability with the kinematic fitting method.
Thor Besier's paper (J Biomech 2003) showed only minor improvements in
repeatability. Is this because the methods have improved since then?
Has the effect of functional/kinematic methods on joint moments been studied?
It seems that more reliable joint centers could make joint moments more
reproducible, between sessions but also between labs and hopefully even
between different marker sets. Some years ago there was an extensive
discussion on Biomch-L about large differences in knee moments between various
labs, some of which probably due to different marker sets and marker
placement.
