  • PhD/Graduate Assistantship - Australia

    Title: PhD/Graduate Assistantship
    Location: University of Western Australia
    Date: August, 2007

The Biomechanics Research group (located in the School of Human Movement and
Exercise Science) at the University of Western Australia is currently
seeking PhD students to work on two different NHMRC funded projects.
Briefly, the first project is investigating the biomechanical and
neuromuscular changes that occur as the result of a training intervention
with Australian Rules Football players. As well as biomechanical testing the
project will also use an epidemiological approach to investigate the
incidence of injury in the participant groups. The second project is a
longitudinal study assessing the relationships between knee joint loading
during walking, tibial cartilage loss and the development and progression of
tibio-femoral osteoarthritis. A key focus of the study is to determine
whether baseline loading patterns predict architectural change in the
tibio-femoral joint two-years post arthroscopic partial meniscectomy.

The successful applicant will have a strong background in biomechanical
testing and also have an interest in developing neuromuscular models for
either of the projects. An interest in injury prevention with an
appreciation of performance requirements for athletes is expected for the
    first project.

All applicants are first asked to contact Dr. Tim Doyle
(tim.doyle@uwa.edu.au). Then with the support of other academics Australian
or New Zealand domestic applicants will be asked to apply for and obtain an
    APA Scholarship (see
    http://www.scholarships.uwa.edu.au/home/postgrad/general/australian_postgrad
uate_awards) international students will be asked to apply for and obtain an
    IPRS (see
    http://www.scholarships.uwa.edu.au/home/postgrad/international/iprs). In
addition to the usual tax-free stipends ($19, 616/year in 2007) offered by
these scholarships this position will attract an additional tax-free
$5000/year (for up to 3 years) as a top-up scholarship. Domestic
applications close 31st October, 2007, international applications close 15th
    August, 2007.
