    POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE POSITION
Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA

Applications are being sought for a post-doctoral researcher to participate in a novel interdisciplinary research activity at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The research focus is the development of a fluid-controlled and a fluid-powered orthotic device for the lower extremity (i.e., Ankle Foot Orthosis or AFO). This project is part of the National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power (http://www.ccefp.org). The goal is to develop a compact, wearable, human-scale orthotic device that is powered by hydraulics or pneumatics.

The desired candidate should have a PhD in Engineering or Biomechanics and should have a strong background in one or more of the following areas:
    • Biomechanics
    • Assistive Device Technologies
    • Bio-Mechatronics
    • Design

The candidate should have excellent leadership skills and should be able to coordinate a multidisciplinary research activity across multiple academic institutions.

    The primary responsibilities are:
    • Lead a research group comprised of several graduate students to design, fabricate and test several iterations of an untethered AFO system that uses Fluid Power
    • Management of project goals and priorities
    • Communicate results and findings through written reports and presentations. Strong spoken and written communication skills are essential.

The position is for 2 years with a potential for reappointment up to 4 years. Applications will be accepted until OCTOBER 15, 2007.

Interested applicants should send (i) a cover letter addressing scientific accomplishments as well as future research plans, (ii) Curriculum Vitae, (iii) and list of 3 references to:
