    Research Studentship
Surrogate materials for assessing the performance of ultrasonic
    surgical devices

Joint Research Institute: Mechanics of Materials & Structures and
    Bioengineering

Professor Lucas currently leads a substantial research activity in
the design of ultrasonic surgical devices, involving design, dynamic
characterisation, device modelling, and computational modelling of
the interaction between the ultrasonic device and human tissue.
Experimental validation of the models plays a key role in this
research area and this work is currently carried out using surrogate
materials for cortical and cancellous bone. These surrogates perform
well for many of the required matches of material properties but do
not perform well for analysis of the interaction of ultrasonic
devices and the material. Professor Tanner’s research is in bio-
medical materials and this co-supervised project will link expertise
in ultrasonic devices and biomaterials to provide new understanding
of the interactions between ultrasonic surgical devices and human
tissue. The aim of this project is therefore to investigate
alternative surrogate materials that better match the coupling of
ultrasonic energy into biomaterials and to develop a programme of
research to measure the effects of power ultrasonic surgical devices
    on human tissue.

    Conditions
The applicant should have a minimum of a 2.1 or equivalent degree in
Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or a related subject.
The stipend for this PhD is currently £12600 per year (tax free) for
three and a half years and the university fees are covered for UK and
    EU students.

To apply, please send your CV to Prof. Margaret Lucas
    (m.lucas@mech.gla.ac.uk) and Prof. Liz Tanner
    (e.tanner@mech.gal.ac.uk), by 23rd November
