A full-time research position is available in the Deptartment of Bioengineering of Imperial College London in bone biomechanics. The MRC funded project will examine the influence of the local mechanical environment on angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels, during fracture healing. Without blood vessel formation, bone will not form, and the fracture will not heal. Fracture non-union complicates treatment and rehabilitation, increases hospital stays, and affects the overall function of the bone. Studies have shown that non-unions are caused by poor vascular conditions, improper mechanical conditions, or both. Understanding the relationship between the two may help in preventing non-unions. Numerous studies have investigated the role of angiogenesis during fracture healing, however many questions remain unanswered: How can we quantify angiogenesis in three dimensions? How does vessel structure and blood flow change during the fracture healing process? How does the local mechanical environment affect angiogenesis during fracture healing?
Candidates should have a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Materials, Bioengineering or related fields with previous experience in experimental research and computation. The candidate should have an academic record of scientific excellence, independent research, and a strong interest in an interdisciplinary approach to research.
