The Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation at the
University of Minnesota Duluth is seeking to fill a full-time, tenure
track exercise science position at the rank of assistant professor
beginning August 25, 2008. Rank and salary will be determined by
successful candidate's education, background and experience.
Required Qualifications include:
1. Academic preparation leading to ability to teach the following
courses: human anatomy, principles of strength and conditioning
programs, sport science applications, and other ESAT (exercise science
athletic training) courses.
2. Earned academic doctorate with specialization and expertise in
exercise science. This degree may be earned from programs housed in
academic departments such as exercise physiology, human performance,
kinesiology, physical education and sport studies, sport and exercise,
education, athletic training, rehabilitation sciences, physiology,
medicine, physical therapy, medical sciences or biological science.
Focus of studies must be toward acute and chromic responses and
adaptations to exercise and training.
3. Ability to pursue successful research and scholarly activities
related to exercise science.
4. Ability to pursue successful grant writing.
5. Involvement at the state and national level professional
associations and organizations.
Desired Qualifications include:
1. Demonstrated successful undergraduate or graduate college teaching
2. National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Strength
and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS)
3. Demonstrated experience as a strength and conditioning specialist
or coach
4. Ability to teach the following courses: physiology and mechanics of
physical activity, functional anatomy and sport injury management,
exercise adherence, exercise leadership, management of fitness
facilities
5. Scholarly publications in exercise sciences
6. Evidence of successful grant writing
7. Experience in undergraduate student advisement/mentoring
8. Experience in development, placement and supervision of interns in
fitness and strength/conditioning facilities
Duties/Responsibilities
The exercise science position is primarily devoted to working with
undergraduate exercise science majors with some work with athletic
training majors, physical education majors and coaching minors. The
major responsibilities are undergraduate teaching; pursuing research
in area of exercise science expertise; advising exercise science
majors; development of a concentration for exercise science majors in
strength and conditioning that qualifies for the NSCA Strength and
Conditioning Educational Recognition Program; and providing service
within and outside the university.
The University of Minnesota Duluth is a state supported public
institution. Approximately 11,000 students are currently enrolled in a
community of 85,000. Duluth, a truly unique city, is at the western
end of Lake Superior, 150 miles north of Minneapolis and St. Paul. It
stretches for nearly 25 miles along the 600-foot-high headlands of the
lake and is a popular tourist attraction, busy international port, and
the cultural, medical, and commercial center of the region. Located in
Minnesota's Arrowhead region the area offers unlimited opportunities
for a variety of year round recreational activities such as hiking,
golfing, canoeing, camping, skiing, skating, fishing, and sailing. The
Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation has 20 full
time and 16 part-time faculty members. Exercise Science is one of six
undergraduate majors and three minors offered. Exercise Science majors
select between Exercise and Sport Science and Health Fitness
concentrations.
