  • American College Sports Medicine Biomechanics Awards Program

    The American College Sports Medicine's (ACSM) Biomechanics Interest
    Group (BIG) in conjunction with corporate sponsors (AMTI, Delsys Inc.,
    Motion Analysis Corp, Motion Labs, Vicon Inc.) have created the ACSM
    Biomechanics Student and Faculty Awards program to recognize exemplar
    achievements by promising scientists in the field of biomechanics. For
    ACSM 2008 to be held in Indianapolis, IN (May 28-31st), twelve awards
    are available with 5 Student Research Awards, 5 Student Travel Awards, 1
    Innovation in Research Award and 1 Career Achievement Award. Details and
    application procedures for each award are presented below.



    1) Student Research Awards (5 awards are available)
    The BIG Awards Committee will select Awardees based upon the scientific
    quality of the submitted materials. The Awardee must attend the Annual
    ACSM meeting to present their work in either poster or podium format.
    The Awardee must attend and will be given their award at the ACSM BIG
    Annual Meeting. The award consists of a certificate and a check for
    $400.00USD.



    Eligibility

    Current or pending student member of the ACSM at the time of the ACSM
    Annual Meeting. A student is considered eligible for the award if they
    are someone who has not received his/ her doctoral degree in the year
    prior to the ACSM annual meeting. Abstract has been submitted and
    accepted for podium or poster presentation at the ACSM Annual meeting.
    Applicants may not concurrently submit for Student Travel Awards.



    Application Process

    Electronic applications must be submitted by March 15th, 2008 to the BIG
    Awards Committee Chair. This date is after the applicant has been
    notified that his/her abstract has been accepted for either podium or
    poster presentation at the ACSM Annual Meeting.



    Application Submission Material

    1) Letter of nomination and endorsement from the Department Head,
    Graduate or Undergraduate Advisor (PDF). This letter should include a
    statement specifying the applicant's contributions and independence to
    the

    work being submitted. The letter should also specify that the applicant
    is seeking the Student Research award.

    2) Expanded abstract of original research submitted and accepted to the
    ACSM annual meeting. The applicant must be the first author and the work
    should be the author's own. The format for the abstract must be expanded
    from the original ACSM abstract to 2 pages, with title, authors and
    institutions clearly listed, all text in 12 pt font with 1" margins.
    Subheadings of Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion and
    Conclusions should be included.

    3) Copy of e-mail correspondence or letter from ACSM verifying that the
    submitted abstract has been accepted to the ACSM Annual meeting.



    Submission Instructions

    Applications should be submitted electronically to the ACSM BIG Awards
    Chair, Dr. Michael R. Torry (mike.torry@shsmf.org); all material must by
    submitted by March 15th, 2008. Please put "YOUR FIRST INITIAL, MI, LAST
    NAME - BIG AWARD AP" in the subject header of the application e-mail.



    2) Student Travel Awards (5 awards are available)

    A Student Travel Award is offered to help offset the cost of travel to
    the ACSM conference to present a poster or podium presentation. The BIG
    Awards Committee will select Awardees based upon the submitted
    materials. The award consists of a certificate and a check for $ of
    $200.00USD.



    Eligibility

    Current or pending student member of the ACSM at the time of the
    submission. A student is considered eligible for the award if they are
    someone who has not received his/ her doctoral degree in the year prior
    to the ACSM annual meeting. Applicants may not concurrently submit for
    Student Research Awards.



    Application Process

    3) ACSM Biomechanics Interest Group - Vendor's Innovation in Research
    Award (1 Award is available)

    This award is open to scientists of all career levels (junior, mid,
    senior) and is awarded for a podium or poster presentation that embodies
    an innovative research idea. The Awardee must attend the Annual ACSM
    meeting to present their work in either poster or podium format. The
    Awardee must attend and will be given their awards at the ACSM BIG
    Annual Meeting. The award consists of a certificate and a check for
    $1000.00USD.



    Eligibility

    The Vendor's Innovation Research Award is open to all scientists,
    including non-ACSM members, but excludes current ACSM-BIG officers and
    members of the Awards Committee.



    Nominations

    Candidates may be self-nominated or nominated by others. Candidates
    should be established scientists whose work incorporates the scientific
    field of human biomechanics.



    Application Submission Material

    or by a colleague

    4) ACSM Biomechanics Interest Group - Motion Analysis Career Achievement
    Award (1 Award)

    The ACSM Biomechanics Interest Group-Motion Analysis Corp. (ACSM
    BIG-MAC) Career Award is the most prestigious honor given by the ACSM
    Biomechanics Interest Group. This award is given in recognition of an
    individual who has made distinguished contributions to the development,
    enhancement and the education of students concentrating in Biomechanics,
    and/or has made distinguished theoretical or empirical contributions to
    basic research in biomechanics and has contributed to the general
    discipline and growth in the field of Biomechanics throughout their
    respective career. The award consists of a certificate and a check for
    $1,500.00USD.



    Eligibility

    The ACSM BIG-MAC Award is open to all scientists, including non-ACSM
    members, but excludes current ACSM-BIG officers and members of the
    Awards Committee.



    Nominations

    Candidates may be self-nominated or nominated by others. Candidates
    should be established scientists whose work incorporates the scientific
    field of human biomechanics.

    2) Comprehensive curriculum vitae (PDF)

    3) Five publications, along with other documentation that support and
    embody the candidate's qualifications for the award (PDF).
