The purpose of this position is to support the Exercise Countermeasures
Project (ECP) at the NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC). This position
assists in evaluating and validating candidate exercise countermeasure
hardware and prescriptions, alone and in combination with other
countermeasures, for the protection of crew health and safety during
lunar and Mars space travel. This position has technical responsibility
for interpreting, organizing, executing and presenting test findings for
ECP engineering assignments.
Duties & Responsibilities
* Generate and maintain the ECP Engineering documentation (e.g. design
proposals, testing protocols, etc.)
* Generate engineering inputs for ECP sponsored studies
* Coordinate regular meetings and generate products resulting from
collaborating NASA centers, the ECP Investigator Team, and other Project
stakeholders
* Perform computer aided design and structural analysis, as required
* Perform biomechanical analysis using motion capture systems, force
sensing systems, and computer based multi-body dynamics simulation
software
* Support engineering activities for ECP space flight and ground analog
studies, including frequent travel to the bed rest facility at UTMB in
Galveston
* Provide inputs to weekly and monthly reports
* Present findings and information to the ECP team, collaborating NASA
centers, and other Project stakeholders
* Communicate project objectives, needs, and requirements to project
team leaders, and assist in long-term planning for meeting programmatic
goals
* Responsible for compliance with Safety, Health and Environmental plan;
must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able
to comply with all safety laws and all of the Company's safety policies
and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential
safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel.
* Responsible for compliance with the Quality Assurance Plan, policies
and procedures
* Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance level as determined by
the Company
* Must demonstrate a strong work ethic and commitment to the customer,
program and team.
* Incumbent will perform other assignments and duties as required.
Education
Required
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Exercise Science plus 3 years of
experience in an engineering or biomechanics field; or Master's Degree
in Engineering or Exercise Science plus 0-2 years of experience in an
Engineering or biomechanics field.

Special Certifications, Clearances or Other
Required
* Demonstrated experience in human biomechanics research, such as gait
analysis or other human movement related studies.
* Must have a thorough understanding of research and mechanical design,
ability to critically analyze research data and assimilate findings
* Experience performing biomechanical analysis using motion capture
systems and force sensing systems is required
* Ability to perform computer aided design and structural analysis is
required
* Effective written and verbal communication skills, both formal and
informal
* Ability to travel independently (domestic and international)
* Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member
* Ability to coordinate and conduct hardware and protocol studies using
human subjects
Desired
* Previous NASA flight and ground hardware development, integration,
verification and/or sustaining engineering experience is strongly
desired
* Minimum of 1 year experience in a position related to NASA support or
aerospace support is strongly desired
* Knowledge of current space flight exercise hardware and physiologic
trends is desired
* Experience performing biomechanical analysis using computer-based
multi-body dynamics simulation software is strongly desired
* Experience with basic exercise physiology testing procedures and
hardware (e.g. muscle function testing, aerobic capacity testing, etc)
is desired
* Ability to generate and update project schedules using Microsoft
