PhD Scholarship Award in the Neuroscience of Postural Control
School of Sport and Exercise Sciences
University of Birmingham
Drs Raymond Reynolds and Martin Lakie invite applications for a PhD
Scholarship Award to investigate the sensorimotor basis of voluntary sway
control. Although standing perfectly still is impossible, postural sway can
be significantly reduced by voluntary exertion. The project will
investigate the role of visual, vestibular and proprioceptive feedback in
voluntary sway control. Sensory perturbation will be induced by electrical
stimulation of the vestibular nerve, muscle vibration and visual occlusion.
The resulting sway responses will be measured by electromagnetic motion
tracking, force platform responses and EMG. The ideal candidate will have a
background in neuroscience, physiology or psychology and an interest in
human motor control. Good IT skills would be an advantage. A willingness to
acquire new skills and knowledge is essential. Further details or informal
inquiries should be addressed Dr Raymond Reynolds (r.f.reynolds@bham.ac.uk).
The School of Sport and Exercise Sciences at the University of Birmingham
provides an excellent infrastructure and intellectually stimulating
environment that supports high quality research. As part of the School's
commitment to research excellence, it is offering several PhD Scholarship
awards this year. The awards are for three years and have an approximate
annual value of £8000 plus fees (note that the scholarships only cover EU
student fees due to funding constraints). The starting date is aimed at
October 2008, although programmes of study commencing at a later date will
be considered in exceptional circumstances. We require that applicants have
a good Honours degree (at least 2.1 or equivalent) and an English
qualification (e.g., GCSE, IELTS etc.). Applications to the School of Sport
and Exercise Sciences, University of Birmingham, should be completed on-
line at: http://www.bham.ac.uk/application/.
The closing date for the application is the 30th April 2008.
General enquiries should be directed to Dr. M. Edwards, Postgraduate
Admissions Tutor (M.Edwards.1@Bham.ac.uk) or to Val Queeley, Admissions
Secretary (tel: 0121 414 4115). Please visit our website for more details:
