A fully-funded research studentship is available for a suitable
candidate to carry out doctoral studies in the area of experimental
joint tissue mechanics. We are seeking a student with a sound
background in biomechanics/biomaterials/bioengineering.
The research will use an equine joint model to study the relationship
between intensive loading, tissue disruption and joint degeneration.
Applicants will be expected to integrate mechanical and tissue
structural concepts to investigate the failure modalities in the
cartilage-bone tissue system under impact loading. Structure/function
related changes associated with both ageing and degeneration will be
studied. Detailed structural analysis at the micro and ultramicroscopic
levels will be an important component of the research.
The successful candidate will be part of a Biomaterials Research Group
that has a strong track record internationally in experimental tissue
mechanics in the areas of cartilage/bone structural imaging (DIC, SEM &
TEM), micro-mechanics of cartilage load-bearing, osteochondral fracture,
osteoarthritis, bone remodelling, IVD structure and failure.
Funding for the successful applicant will include payment of fees and a
stipend of $25,000 (tax-free) per year for 3 years.
The University of Auckland is New Zealand’s top-ranked research
university. The university is set in the heart of Auckland city, which
is also known as the ‘City of Sails’. Auckland resides between the
sparkling waters of the Waitemata and Manukau Harbours, and close-by are
impressive beaches, rainforests and sprawling hillsides.
