Applications are invited for the following post:
Lecturer (Above the Bar) in Biomedical Engineering (Biomaterials)
The department of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering wishes to appoint a Lecturer (above the bar) to the above full-time permanent post. Since its establishment at NUI, Galway, in 1998, the Biomedical Engineering programme has experienced rapid expansion with respect to undergraduate student numbers, postgraduate research students, industry interaction and research funding from government agencies as well as industry. The department is affiliated with the National Centre for Biomedical Engineering Science (NCBES), which is located on campus. The Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI) and the Network of Excellence for Functional Biomaterials (NFB), which have linkages to the departmental staff, have been established through major Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) awards. Additionally, the Martin Ryan Institute (MRI), also linked to the departmental staff, has been the recipient of a major Beaufort Award. Current funding for the Biomaterials Group is in the order of EUR12M. This funding has been sourced primarily through competitive funding from Science Foundation Ireland, Health Research Board, Enterprise Ireland, DEBRA Ireland and EU-Framework programmes.
In addition, Galway is the focus of the highest concentration of medical device companies in Europe including over 50% of the world's top 25 biomedical companies, which support approximately 10,000 jobs in manufacturing and research and development.
The appointee will be required to:
Develop and manage an outstanding programme of inter-disciplinary research in biomaterials. Candidates with a research background in the development of nanoscale biodegradable scaffolds for biomolecular delivery would be particularly welcome.
Contribute to the teaching and continuing development of undergraduate courses.
Source and attract research funding to support the strategic development and growth of the research programme.
Develop links with the major research institutes at NUI, Galway, established research groups worldwide and the medical devices and pharmaceutical industries, and maintain a close working relationship with NFB.
