A funded PhD studentship is available in the Sports Biomechanics and Motor Control Research Group at Loughborough University for a project entitled:
Limitations to synchronization and timing of coordinated movements in sport
Students with a background in either: physics, engineering, computer science, biology, mathematics, or cognitive sciences are encouraged to apply. Applicants will be expected to have experience with experimental protocols and some level of computer programming.
Summary of project.
Coordinated movement is critical not only to sports technique and performance but to daily living and as such represents a fundamental area of research. However, in sport and elite performance the level of coordination needed can be the limiting factor that decides between success and injury. This project will involve investigating a range of coordination tasks: starting with simple pressing tasks, moving to single phase multi-joint tasks; then multiple limb and finally whole body tasks, to determine the limitations to synchronization and timing of coordinated movements. These will be assessed with and without fatigue and with extra loading on the muscular system. Both experimental methods, force, motion analysis and EMG measurements, and computer simulations, including research into perturbations and robustness, will be utilised.
