Like others, I am grateful for this healthy debate.
It is my sincere hope that the investigators in both
studies will be willing to provide fundamental
methodology and results to the community for
discussion prior to publication. Certainly this will
only improve the quality of the manuscripts to come.
Importantly, should Mr. Pistorius compete in Beijing
(reasonably likely in the relay), I suspect it will be
the story of the Games. As Dr. van den Bogert has
noted, we as a community will be called upon to
provide informed perspective. With appropriate
caveats and respect to the investigators and the
review process, we need to be able to do so
intelligently - even if not unanimously. "I'll get
back to you when the papers are published" is not in
my view an appropriate answer, and uninformed
speculation is certainly worse.
