The biomechanics research group at Old Dominion University includes
collaborations in the departments of human movement science, physical
therapy and mechanical engineering. Additionally, we collaborate with the
Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center, the Naval Medical Center
Portsmouth and Eastern Virginia Medical School. Together, we have a Sports
Medicine Research Laboratory, Biomechanics Laboratory, Dynamic Environment
Simulation Laboratory, Computational Biomechanics Laboratory and a Medical
and Healthcare Modeling and Simulation Cluster, in which collaborative
research is conducted across all aforementioned disciplines. We conduct in
vivo and in vitro testing, as well as modeling and simulations. Our
laboratory capabilities include comprehensive motion analysis, experimental
simulations of dynamic impact, in vitro testing facilities, finite element
and rigid body modeling capabilities. We have three Ph.D. studentships in
1) Human Movement Science, 2) Physical Therapy and 3) Mechanical
Engineering. All positions provide a stipend and tuition assistance, and
begin in the fall of 2008. A detailed description for each position and

1) Human Movement Science:
The Human Movement Science Doctoral Program in the Department of Exercise
Science, Sport, Physical Education and Recreation is seeking highly
motivated individuals who are interested in pursuing a doctorate.
Applicants should have an interest in applied kinesiology research,
athletic training education concerns or clinical outcomes related to manual
therapy; be willing to develop a research agenda in the area of lower
extremity injury management/prevention, athletic training education,
clinical outcomes, and postural control/gait/strength analysis within the
physically active population (e.g., military and athletes). Applicants
willing to help seek external funding are highly desired.
Position Description:
• Teaching and Research Assistant for associated faculty within the
ESPER Department.
• Assistant Lab Manager: Sports Medicine Research Laboratory (either
the Motion Analysis Division or Sensory/Motor Analysis Division) or Applied
Anatomy Laboratory
Qualifications:
2 years experience as an ATC, PT, PA, CSCS or with research experience in
the biomechanics/clinical outcomes/athletic training education field,
earned masters degree, previous experience in research and interest in
mentoring graduate and undergraduate students.

2) Physical Therapy:
The Biomechanics Laboratory at the Department of Physical Therapy is
anticipating an opening for a part time research assistant (20 hours per
week). The candidate should hold a Masters degree in either Biomechanics,
Motor Control, Movement Science or Bioengineering.
Experience working in a biomechanics or Motor control laboratory facility
is desired but not mandatory. The position will require the ability to
efficiently collect and analyze a variety of kinematic, kinetic and
electrophysiological measures including force plate, accelerometer, surface
EMG, goniometers, and segmental motions. Programming skills in LabView and
MATLAB are highly desired. The candidate should be familiar with
conducting human research during a variety of movement tasks. Preference
will be given to candidates with experience in working on postural control
and locomotion projects. The candidate should be a highly motivated
individual, capable of working both independently and as part of the
research team within the laboratory.

3) Mechanical Engineering
The Department of Mechanical Engineering is searching for a Ph.D. student
to work on a project in collaboration with the department of orthopedic
surgery at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, to study foot and ankle
kinematics. A minimum of a B.S. in mechanical or biomedical engineering or
a related field is required, a masters degree is desired. The position
will require collection of in vivo and in vitro data, an understanding of
kinematics and optimization. Programming skills in Matlab are desired.
Teaching and/or grading of undergraduate classes may be necessary.
