University Fellowship (Teaching & Research) in Biomedical Engineering (Biomaterials) (2 Years)
The department of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering wishes to appoint a
University Fellow (Teaching & Research) to the above contract post. Since its
establishment at NUI, Galway, in 1998, the Biomedical Engineering programme has
experienced rapid expansion with respect to postgraduate research students, research
funding from government agencies as well as industry, undergraduate student numbers.
The undergraduate programme in Biomedical Engineering, which is internationally
accredited, is interdisciplinary in scope with students taking courses in the Engineering
and Informatics, Science, and Medical and Health Sciences Colleges.
NUI, Galway provides a fertile developmental environment for the new University
Fellow. The department is affiliated with the National Centre for Biomedical Engineering
Science (NCBES), which is located on campus. The Regenerative Medicine Institute
(REMEDI) and the Network of Excellence for Functional Biomaterials (NFB), which
have linkages to the departmental staff, have been established through major Science
Foundation Ireland (SFI) awards. Additionally, the Martin Ryan Institute (MRI), also
linked to the departmental staff, has been the recipient of a major Beaufort Award.
Current funding for the Biomaterials Group is in the order of €12M. This funding has
been sourced primarily through competitive funding from Science Foundation Ireland,
Health Research Board, Enterprise Ireland, DEBRA Ireland and EU-Framework
programmes. This position is funded by Science Foundation Ireland as a part of the
establishment of NFB. The position is for 2 years, with the possibility of an extension to
3 years, pending SFI review. Research start-up funds are available for the successful
candidate.
Galway is the focus of the highest concentration of medical device companies in Europe
including over 50% of the world’s top 25 biomedical companies, which support
approximately 10,000 jobs in manufacturing and research and development.
The appointee will be required to:
Contribute to the teaching of undergraduate students in biomedical engineering,
including lecturing, supervising laboratories and directing undergraduate projects.
Develop a programme of inter-disciplinary research in biomaterials, develop links
with the major research institutes at NUI, Galway and established research groups
worldwide, and maintain a close working relationship with NFB. Candidates with
research experience in biodegradable materials would be particularly welcome.
Contribute to the supervision and teaching of postgraduate students and the
development of courses for graduate education programmes in the area of
biomaterials.
The successful applicant should:
Preferably hold a PhD in a Biomaterials related area.
Have an appropriate publication record in biomaterials.
Possess interpersonal skills commensurate with the need to communicate with
students, colleagues, patients, funding agencies and researchers over a wide range of
disciplines and interests.
The post is considered to be developmental in nature and the successful candidate will
receive support and training.
