SYMPOSIUM ON THE BIOMECHANICS OF FUNCTIONAL FOOTWEAR
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

The University of Calgary, Calgary, Canada
    August 19-20, 1994

organised by the ISB Working Group on Functional Footwear
in conjunction with the Canadian Society of Biomechanics Biennial Meeting

    ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM

A Symposium on the Biomechanics of Functional Footwear will be held in
conjunction with the Canadian Society of Biomechanics Biennial Meeting
at the University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, from August 18
    to August 20, 1994.

The Symposium is being organised by the International Society of
Biomechanics Working Group on Functional Footwear. The Working Group aims
to encourage research and promote discussion of biomechanical issues
related to functional footwear, including sports shoes, clinical and
prescription footwear and footwear designed for special purposes.

The Symposium will be a one and a half day meeting, running in parallel
with the Canadian Society of Biomechanics sessions on August 19th and
20th. The programme will consist mainly of invited presentations. As you
will see from the attached preliminary programme, we are fortunate that
many of the leading experts in footwear and lower extremity biomechanics
    have agreed to make presentations.

The Symposium sessions have been planned with the goal of allowing
speakers to make detailed presentations while maximising opportunities for
the discussion of important issues. The session topics have been selected
in order to highlight important areas of current research in footwear and
related lower extremity biomechanics. In each session, up to three invited
speakers will each make extended presentations on related topics. In
addition to responding to individual questions following each presentation,
speakers will form a panel for more extended questions and discussion
at the end of each session.

    PRELIMINARY PROGRAMME OF INVITED SPEAKERS

    LOADS ON THE LOWER EXTREMITY
    Impact shock
Dr. Mario Lafortune, University of Guelph, Canada
    Heel impact mechanics
Dr. Dirk de Clerq et al, University of Gent, Belgium
    Loading and subtalar joint motion
Dr. Ton van den Bogert, University of Calgary, Canada

    MOTION OF THE LOWER EXTREMITY
Movement transfer between foot and leg
Prof. Benno Nigg, University of Calgary, Canada
    Fatigue and lower extremity function.
Prof. Peter Bruggeman, DSHS, Cologne, Germany
3D quantification of subtalar joint motion
Dr. Gerald Cole, University of Calgary, Canada

    PLANTAR PRESSURE DISTRIBUTION
Plantar pressure measurement and applications to footwear.
Prof. Ewald Hennig, University of Essen, Germany
    In-shoe plantar pressures.
Dr. Simon Leuthi, Adidas America, USA
Foot pressure patterns in children and infants.
Dr. Jeff Pisciotta, Stride Rite Children's Group, USA

    FINTE ELEMENT METHODS
Footwear for "at risk" diabetic feet-can the Finite Element Model
    help?
Prof. Peter Cavanagh, CELOS, Pennsylvania State University.

FOOTWEAR & PERFORMANCE - Is there a Link?
    An open forum discussion
introduced and chaired by Dr. E. C. Frederick, Exeter
    Research.

    BIOMECHANICAL TESTING AND STANDARDISATION
    Stability and rearfoot motion testing
Dr. Joseph Hamill, University of Massachusetts.
    Laboratory measurement of traction
Dr. Gordon Valiant, NIKE Sport Research Lab.
    Cushioning and the impact test
Dr. Martyn Shorten, Portland Oregon, USA.

FOOTWEAR AND PERFORMANCE - Is there a Link?

During the Symposium, an Open Forum discussion on possible links between
footwear and human performance will be held. The discussion will be
introduced and chaired by Dr. E.C.'Ned'Frederick of Exeter Research, Inc.
The format of the discussion is a little unusual in that participants in
the audience will be encouraged to present their own ideas, data and
experience with the aid of slides and/or overhead transparencies. The
purpose of this format is to encourage more substantial discussion and to
allow for the exchange of ideas and unpublished or preliminary data in a
less formal setting. Any participant in the conference will be able to
submit up to three relevant slides or overhead transparencies before the
Open Forum begins. Everyone with an interest in the influence of footwear
on performance is encouraged to participate. Don't forget to bring your
    slides!

    SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS TO CSB

Those wishing to make a slide or poster presentation at the meeting
should submit an abstract to the CSB meeting organisers. Submission forms
are available from the University of Calgary at the address given below.
The deadline for abstract submission is March 15, 1994 and notification
of acceptance or otherwise will be given by May 15th 1994.

If enough papers related to footwear topics are accepted, a special session
of free presentations will be organised. If there are not enough such
submissions to warrant a separate session, those accepted will be
incorporated into the CSB meeting programme in the normal way.

    REGISTRATION

Registration for the Symposium is included in that of the CSB meeting. No
additional registration fees. The registration fee for the CSB meeting is
Cdn$ 215 for full registration and Cdn$ 75 for students, increasing to
    $250 and $100 respectively after June 15 1994.
