RESEARCH FIELD
The Ph.D. programme in Bioengineering aims at training highly
competent researchers with the potential to be leading scientists.
One of the core groups within this PhD programme is specialized in
Biomechanics. The students will be educated in a stimulating and
multidisciplinary environment, both through high level courses and
through a demanding, creative and original research work, which will
involve the students in some major European-funded research
programmes. Research projects will be carried on in very well
equipped, state-of-the-art laboratories, in a highly collaborative
environment. Supervision will be provided during personal and team
work by full time senior staff.
The PhD curriculum in biomechanics covers a variety of topics
including Movement analysis, fixation of orthopaedic implants, and
Knee biomechanics. The selected candidate will discuss with the
Supervisors the specific research topic within this framework. The
collaboration between the Electronic and the Mechanical Engineering
Departments of the University of Bologna, the Rizzoli Orthopaedic
Institutes, the University of Sassari, and the IUSM (Istituto
Universitario di Scienze Motorie) will provide a total coverage, and
an integrated multidisciplinary co-supervision.
The students will investigate the biomechanics of healthy, diseased
and operated joint from an engineering viewpoint. This will include a
multi-scale approach.
The accomplishments of the students will be assessed by the number of
papers published in peer reviewed
international journals and by the number of patents filed.
At the end of the Ph.D. programme, students will possess solid
scientific and engineering skills, the ability to conceive and carry
out original research projects, and an autonomous entrepreneurship
spirit.
The students will be involved in international collaborations and
will have the opportunity to work with international partners, also
abroad.
Contacts and collaborations with industry will be also part of the
Ph.D. educational programme.
