  • RESEARCH POSITION ON“BIOMECHANICS OF TISSUES AND ORGANS” ATIST-ICIST, L ISBON, PORTUGAL

RESEARCH POSITION ON “BIOMECHANICS OF TISSUES AND ORGANS” IS OFFERED AT
    IST-ICIST, LISBON, PORTUGAL

The Instituto Superior Tecnico (IST) is one of the oldest and largest
schools of Science and Engineering in Portugal, and is a member of the
prestigious network of leading European Universities of Technology,
CLUSTER. ICIST is a Research Unit of IST; it studies, among other topics,
Mechanics, Modeling and Analysis of Structures, including Biomechanics of
Tissues and Structures. The research on Biomechanics within ICIST is
integrated in a large Research Consortium on Biomedical Engineering,
involving various research units of IST and of the School of Medicine of
the University of Lisbon. For several years these two Portuguese Schools
have been cooperating on Undergraduate and Graduate Programs on Biomedical
    Engineering.

    1) JOB DESCRIPTION.
SENIOR RESEARCHER ON BIOMECHANICS OF TISSUES AND ORGANS.

A successful candidate will conduct independent research of international
standards on one of the sub-fields: (i) Acquisition and Processing of
Geometrical and Kinematical Data, or (ii) Experimental Study of Living
    Tissues”. This includes:
    - Participation in the research and projects activities carried out at
    IST-ICIST.
    - Participation and promotion of PhD and Msc Theses.
    - Submission of new national or international research projects.

The research on the above sub-fields will address the topics:

    (i) Acquisition and Processing of Geometrical and Kinematical Data – The
purpose of this research is to bridge the gap between medical imaging and
typical pre- and post-processors used in mechanical and physical
simulations of complex structures like human tissues and organs. On one
hand, the post-doc is expected to master the processes of image
acquisition (CT, MRI, etc), image enhancement and restoration, image
segmentation, fusion of images from different modalities, surface and
volume mesh generation and adjustments, so as to create computational
meshes of good quality. On the other hand it would also be desirable that
he might contribute to the in-vivo validation of biomechanical
computations by using medical imaging to extract kinematical measures of
    interest (displacements, velocities, strains).

(ii) Experimental Study of Living Tissues – This laboratory research aims
at characterizing the mechanical behavior of hard and soft tissues.
Studies to correlate macroscopic properties of tissues with their
microscopic structure and with their biochemical properties may also be
conducted. In particular, the researcher is expected to contribute to some
of the ongoing or planned studies on bone osteoporosis, intervertebral
disc implants, cartilage inflammation and osteoarthritis, viscoelastic and
damage properties of soft tissues, physico-chemical coupling effects in
articular cartilage under cyclic mechanical and chemical loadings.
