Biomechanical Engineering Position -- The Johns Hopkins University
Applied Physics Laboratory (APL)
The Biomedicine Business Area within APL is seeking a motivated
Biomechanical Engineer with interest and experience in computational
modeling. The selected candidate will apply knowledge of the principles
of mechanics and finite element modeling techniques to problems of
interest to U.S. Government sponsors, participate in establishing the
technical direction of existing programs, and provide thought leadership
for future work. This is an opportunity to join an innovative team of
dedicated professionals currently working to solve challenging
biomedical problems. The research team is involved in critical efforts
including the development of computational models of the human body,
investigation of dynamic loading events, and the assessment of novel
injury mitigation systems. At APL, we form interdisciplinary project
teams to address the needs of our sponsors, drawing from the depth and
breadth of expertise around the Laboratory, across the University, and
with outside technical organizations. The successful candidate must be a
highly-motivated, team-oriented, self-starter desiring to be challenged
by working on problems of national importance and must have the ability
and interest to work across internal and external organizations.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The selected Biomechanical Engineer will work to
* Develop and exercise computational models of the human body
* Perform simulations of dynamic impact scenarios, including blast and
ballistic events
* Analyze simulations in the development of injury criteria and damage
thresholds
* Provide thought leadership and technical direction
QUALIFICATIONS:
The selected candidate must possess
* MS degree in biomechanics, mechanical engineering, or a related field
* Minimum of 5 years experience in computational modeling and
simulations of human systems or organs
* Demonstrated proficiency in LSDyna and Abaqus
* Experience with MADYMO occupant simulation program
* Knowledge of data acquisition methods coupled with demonstrated data
processing and analysis techniques.
* Experience leading teams of engineers or modelers in addressing
complex problems
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* US Citizen - Applicants selected will be subject to a Government
security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for
access to classified information, which includes US citizenship.
It is preferred that the selected candidate will possess 5 or more years
of experience in blast physics and loading mechanisms and their effects
on either human or vehicle systems with demonstrated experience in
MatLab or equivalent programming experience. The ideal candidate will
have knowledge of computational fluid dynamics and understanding of
injury metrics and biological tissue testing as well as familiarity with
anthropomorphic dummies and SAE data collection and experience in
automotive impact analysis.
SPECIAL WORK CONDITIONS:
Candidate will be expected to assist with biological tissue testing,
which will require the strict observance of biohazard safety procedures.
Some travel to test sites and conferences.
SECURITY:
Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security
investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to
classified information, which includes US citizenship.
