Zimmer GmbH is looking for an engineer to join the Zimmer Tribology Research
Group located in Winterthur, Switzerland. The Tribology Group is part of
Zimmer©ös corporate research group and performs tribological characterization
of orthopedic joint replacement systems, such as total hip and knee
replacements. The successful candidate will provide technical support to the
research team to accomplish objectives in the tribological evaluation of
articulation surfaces for joint replacements, and also in the identification
and assessment of new technologies for potential use in orthopedic
applications. The individual is responsible for completing the assigned
research projects in a timely and efficient manner. He or she will be
required to make technical decisions that are important to the company©ös
current and future product portfolio.
The scope of responsibilities includes the following:
- Lead and participate in tribology research projects
- Evaluate tribological characteristics of new technologies or new
processing routes for implant materials
- Contribute to the development of material and device performance
specifications
- Make technical decisions and recommendations that may be critical to
projects, product performance, new product development, manufacturing
methods and quality control
- Solve manufacturing problems using advanced understanding of research
and material technologies
- Establish networks with external research labs, companies and vendors
- Provide technical support for other departments, e.g. Development,
Biomechanics, Manufacturing, Quality, Marketing, and Legal
Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications include a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering,
Biomedical Engineering or Material Science (MSc or PhD preferred),
complemented by 1-3 years experience in tribology (medical industry or
academia preferred). The candidate must possess problem-solving capabilities
to be able to efficiently perform failure analyses, develop testing
methodologies and execute tribological characterization studies. The
candidate must also have working experience/knowledge of surface
characterization techniques such as SEM-EDX, optical microscopy, image
analysis and profilometry. A fundamental understanding of various implant
materials (such as: ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene, cobalt-chromium
alloys and ceramics) and knowledge of joint biomechanics is an advantage.
The candidate must possess excellent written and verbal communication
skills, expertise in technical writing, statistical analysis and computer
skills and be proficient in making technical presentations.
