Post-Doc fellowship: SHOCK BEHAVIOR OF HIP PROSTHESES

Department of Health Sciences and Engineering, Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines, Saint-Etienne, France (http://www.emse.fr)

Keywords: Hip joint, prostheses, bioceramics, shock behavior, biomechanics, tribology, damage modeling, Finite Elements, Matlab®

Description: Degradation of hip prostheses involves three main mechanisms: friction, fretting corrosion and shocks. Fretting and shocks are still not very well characterized because in vitro experiments require specific and heavy facilities. The Department of Health Sciences and Engineering at “Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines” has a recognized expertise about the shock behavior of femoral heads and acetabular cups. This post-doc fellowship is aimed at improving the knowledge about particular wear mechanisms (mechanical and corrosive wear and synergistic effects), especially regarding the influence of material parameters. Experimental studies and Finite Elements Analyses will be carried out in parallel. The main goal is to predict life expectation of hip prostheses. Previous results have shown that the microstructure of ceramics (porosity, etc.) strongly affects the shock behavior. Using multi-scale modeling, the influence of ceramics microstructure will be included in the models for improving the prediction of life expectation.
The study is supported by a company manufacturing prostheses. This company is willing to develop new composite materials made of ceramics. The shock behavior of these composite materials still needs to be characterized and better understood before releasing novel stronger prostheses. The project is also supported by the French research agency.
