Colleagues: please see below for description of an opening at Zimmer; questions or applications can be addressed to me as indicated in the announcement.
Zimmer, Inc., a global leader in the development, manufacturing, and marketing of orthopaedic devices, currently has an immediate, full time opening for a Senior Research Engineer, Computational Analysis.
Principal Job Functions:
This engineer will specialize in the use of computational tools to investigate patient- and population-specific (PPS) implant design. In particular, the individual will be the primary supporter, continuing developer, and user for a comprehensive PPS software platform that integrates custom code, third party software (CAD/FEA), and open-source tools (ITK/VTK) to interrogate bone morphology. The individual will utilize these and other tools to support product development and follow independent R&D queries. This person reports to a Principal Engineer in the Simulations Group, but is expected to handle responsibilities with little or no supervision. Additional responsibilities include the following:
1. Work closely with developers to address questions pertaining to PPS design issues, including development of new algorithms.
2. Act as an internal consultant for PPS design in theory and in practice through lectures, demonstrations, and training sessions.
3. Maintain currency with open-source tools including ITK and VTK, and coordinate with IT and Quality to maintain the validity of these tools for in-house applications.
4. Assist in the maintenance, upgrading, and addition of computer hardware and simulation software, particularly as it relates to PPS design.
5. Support product development and research through use of traditional computational mechanics tools including finite element analysis and multi-body dynamics.
6. Maintain communication with vendors, suppliers, test laboratory engineers, outside consultants and outside researchers on matters pertaining to job duties and other business related issues.
7. Monitor technical and medical literature for advances relative to job function.
8. Maintain a level of expertise consistent with current best practices through continuing education and regular contributions to peer-reviewed literature.
Qualifications:
* Minimum qualifications include an M.S. degree from an accredited curriculum in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline; a Ph.D. is preferred.
* Knowledge of medical image acquisition and processing including visualization, segmentation, registration, and development of surface models is required; orthopaedic application of this knowledge is preferred.
* Candidate must have hands-on familiarity with accessing and utilizing open-source tools including ITK/VTK.
* Candidate must be proficient in software development and programming, including C++ and Python, for both algorithm and GUI development.
* Candidate must have superior communication, technical writing, and PC skills and be comfortable making technical presentations.
* Working knowledge of the principles of solid and rigid body biomechanics and the application of simulation techniques such as FEA is required.
* Experience with commercial simulation tools (e.g. ABAQUS, ANSYS) is preferred. Experience with general business software, CAD software (e.g. Unigraphics) and other geometry manipulation software (e.g. MIMICS, Amira, Geomagic Studio) is desired.
* There will be a moderate amount of business travel requiring absences from home.
