EPSRC Project Studentship
This is a late call for applications for an exciting EPSRC project
studentship based in the Faculty of Engineering at Imperial College
London. The successful applicant will join the Structural Biomechanics
research group based in the Department of Civil and Environmental
Engineering.
The research will focus on assessing the behaviour of the femur as a
complete musculo-skeletal construct, in order to allow accurate
assessment of the effects of damage to either the hard tissue (bone) or
soft tissue (muscles and ligaments) forming the femoral construct
spanning between the hip and knee joints, and will form part of the
group’s ongoing research in this area. The aim of the work is to allow
biomechanical evaluation to inform clinical decisions, for example
choice of implant and surgical approach in hip and knee arthroplasty, as
well as muscle re-attachment procedures, following injury or associated
with neuropathic disorders.
Numerical modelling will be carried out using the College supercomputer,
developing sophisticated models of the femur as a complete
musculo-skeletal construct, including the effects of muscles and
ligaments in controlling movement. Experimental work will focus on the
assessment of muscle parameters for use in finite element and inverse
dynamics models being used in the group, and will be carried out as
necessary within the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, and the
Department of Mechanical Engineering.
It is expected that the successful applicant will have an outstanding
undergraduate background, and will come from a biomedical, civil, or
mechanical engineering background, although applications are sought from
anyone who has proven expertise in conducting lab based experiments, and
computational modelling. It is anticipated that the successful candidate
will start by January of 2009, with an immediate start being preferred.
The studentship covers fees and carries a minimum annual stipend of
