The Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics (ESM) at Virginia Tech
seeks applications for one tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant
Professor rank. The ideal candidate is expected to conduct innovative
research in one or more fields of experimental mechanics including dynamics,
solid mechanics, or fluid mechanics. Most importantly, ESM faculty members
are expected to demonstrate a broad scholarly interest in engineering with a
    special emphasis on fundamental mechanics.

A doctoral degree or equivalent in a relevant area of science or engineering
is required. Interest in developing or interfacing experimental mechanics
measurements and analysis procedures within the domain of energy (e.g., fuel
cells, renewable energy, energy conversion, clean energy, or energy storage)
or biology (e.g., cellular mechanics, soft tissue mechanics, macromolecular
biology, biodynamics, or biofluids) is an asset. Senior applicants must have
a distinguished scholarly record with international visibility. Prior
experience working as part of multidisciplinary team is desirable, since
such research is highly valued in ESM.

The ESM department (www.esm.vt.edu ) has
twenty-five faculty members with annual research expenditures of more than
$6M, used to support more than 80 Ph.D. students in our graduate program.
Our faculty members work closely with the School of Biomedical Engineering
    and Sciences (www.sbes.vt.edu ), the
    Macromolecules and Interfaces Institute (www.mii.vt.edu
), and the Institute for Critical Technologies and
Applied Sciences (www.ictas.vt.edu ). ICTAS is
home to the Nanoscale Characterization and Fabrication Laboratory a new
facility equipped with more than $10 million in highly specialized
equipment. Faculty members will also have the potential to develop
productive collaborations with industrial partners through new state
initiatives such as the advanced propulsion and advanced manufacturing
centers being developed in collaboration with Rolls-Royce Corporation.
Additional information about Virginia Tech (www.vt.edu
    ), the College of Engineering (www.eng.vt.edu ),
and the town of Blacksburg (www.blacksburg.va.us
    ) is available online.

Applicants should apply at www.jobs.vt.edu to
posting number 081061 and include a resume, a letter addressing the above
requirements, and the names of at least five references. The initial review
of applications will begin November 15, 2008, and will continue until the
    position is filled.

Virginia Tech is committed to the principle of diversity and seeks a broad
and diverse spectrum of candidates including women, minorities, veterans,
and people with disabilities. Individuals with disabilities desiring
accommodations in the application process should notify Anne-Marie Bracken,
brackena@vt.edu, 540-231-3243. Virginia Tech is a recipient of a National
Science Foundation ADVANCE Institutional Transformation Award
    (www.advance.vt.edu ) to increase the
participation of women in academic science and engineering careers.
