Rehabilitation Research in Pediatric Mobility Postdoctoral Engineering Fellowship

Marquette University and the Medical College of Wisconsin have an opening for a post-doctoral engineering fellow funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education (NIDRR). The training program is for 24 to 36 months in duration and is structured to provide cross-disciplinary training in research, publication and grantsmanship skills. The fellow will be matched with a mentoring team of both Ph.D. and M.D. mentors on an appropriate pediatric mobility rehabilitation research project.
The postdoctoral trainee will experience a program designed to provide each candidate with a unique set of capabilities to succeed as a rehabilitation researcher. There are three essential elements into the training program (1) Didactics, (2) Mentored Research Areas and (3) Collegial & Collaborative Activities. Trainees receive extensive training and experience in proposal writing and the critical peer review process. The capstone experience for the postdoctoral trainees is the completion of a sponsored workshop in their field of study with nationally recognized leaders in attendance.
The program offers both directed mentorship research training and formal didactic components. This includes a cross-disciplinary course structure for all trainees.
Qualifications: Ph.D. in biomedical engineering or related engineering field with strong evidence of an interest in research.
Responsibilities:
The postdoctoral trainee will participate in all three elements of the training program, including:
1. Completing the didactic requirements including courses, workshops, and seminars in evidence based research, scientific writing and grantsmanship, biostatistics and outcomes assessment, pediatric motion analysis, ethics and legal issues, as well as practical research skills such as manuscript and grant writing, and IRB review mechanisms;
2. Completing a directed independent research project in one of three research areas: skeletal and connective tissue biology, assistive devices, or foot and ankle mobility;
3. Participating in Collegial & Collaborative Activities such as joining a national organization, submitting an abstract or short paper for a national scientific meeting, attending a national scientific meeting, and giving two presentations per year at the ARRT meetings;
As part of the three elements of the training program, the postdoctoral trainee will also
1. Submit an intramural proposal
2. Complete a pilot study
3. Submit multiple journal articles
4. Submit two extramural proposals.
Within the Training Grant, each of the three training elements has measurable performance objectives established for the trainee.
