A post-doctoral research associate position is now available in the Single Motor Unit (SMU)
Laboratory of the Sensory Motor Performance Program (SMPP) at Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago
(RIC). The successful candidate will work on projects that involve both computational modeling and
experimental recordings of EMG signals in human subjects. We seek to understand the muscle
physiology and motoneuron/motor unit control properties in normal healthy individuals as well as
their alterations in patients with neuromuscular diseases or neurological disorders. We are
particularly interested in noninvasively exploring these questions using the state of the art high
density surface EMG recording techniques. The successful candidate will work with SMPP research
scientist Dr. Ping Zhou, and SMPP and SMU lab Director Dr. Zev Rymer. Opportunities also exist to
interact in collaborative research with other engineering and neuroscience faculty.
Candidates should have a PhD degree in biomedical engineering, bioengineering, electrical
engineering, or a closely related discipline. A strong signal processing background is required and
experience with EMG recordings is desired. We will, however, consider candidates who are otherwise
well-qualified but lack EMG experience if they are exceptionally motivated to learn in the new field.

Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, and in the Northwestern University Engineering
