Dear Biomch-L readers,
Once in a while, I receive questions on how to obtain operational information
for a list like Biomch-L. General information on listserver operation and
details about specific help files can be obtained by sending the request HELP
to LISTSERV@HEARN.BITNET. However, it would appear that not all necessary
information can be obtained in this way.
The posting below was received last week from LSTSRV-L, the discussion list on
LISTSERVer operation. Those of you interested in this type of information might
wish to subscribe, by sending the request SUB LSTSRV-L
to LISTSERV@FRULM11.BITNET. Since LSTSRV-L is a `peered' list (i.e., with mul-
tiple servers world-wide), your request may be forwarded to a server closer to
you.
One useful command is the option SET BIOMCH-L (NO)MAIL. If you are going away
for some time, you might wish to suspend reception of any posting until your
return. Instead of signing off, setting the NOMAIL option will simply inhibit
postings to your account, and you may enable MAIL and retrieve the LOG files
from LISTSERV@HEARN after your return, by sending requests to LISTSERV@HEARN of
the form SEND BIOMCH-L LOGnnmm, where nn is the month (01 - 12), and mm the
year (89 - 90). In this way, your subscription, and thus access to the BIOMCH-L
database (which is rather small at the present time) will be maintained, and
others will be able to retrieve your address from the listserver (unless the
SET BIOMCH-L CONCEAL option was issued by you, which, at the present time, is
not the case for any of our current 164 subscribers).
Regards -- Herman J. Woltring.
N.B.: Note that LISTSERV replies are usually in the form of NETDATA files which
are processed differently from email on various systems. For instance, VAX/VMS
systems using JNET software (e.g., HEITUE5.EARN) provide a RECEIVE utility for
such files.
