Postdoctoral Fellowship in Machine Learning and Prosthetic Control

A post-doctoral fellowship is available at the Rehabilitation Institute
of Chicago (RIC) and Northwestern University in the area of lower limb
prosthetic control. The goal of the research is to allow amputees to
control powered lower limb prostheses in a more efficient and intuitive
way through the intelligent integration of information from the user and
the physical environment. We are looking for a candidate who has
experience in machine learning or Bayesian statistics and laboratory
skills related to robotics, prosthetics and/or physiological signal
processing. Additional relevant skills include locomotor modeling,
sensor fusion and cooperative control.
The project is a collaborative effort between the laboratories of Drs.
Eric Perreault, Todd Kuiken and Konrad Koerding, and the fellow will
have opportunities to interact with the personnel from each of these
groups. In addition, there are many related laboratories at the RIC,
most affiliated with the Sensory Motor Performance Program and the
Neural Center for Bionic Medicine. These groups are devoted to the study
of musculoskeletal, neuromuscular and sensory disorders associated with
abnormal control of posture and movement, and with the restoration of
movement control via enhanced neural interfaces and prosthetic design.
These groups contain approximately 125 research staff members with
backgrounds in engineering, neuroscience and clinical medicine. All are
focused on the study and treatment of motor and sensory dysfunctions.
The research environment at RIC is highly collaborative and the
successful applicant will be encouraged to draw upon the available
opportunities.
The position is available for two years with possibilities for renewal
provided that adequate progress is made. The nominal start date is June
