Director of Biomechanics Research

The Institute of Orthopedic Research and Education (IORE) (www.iore.net) in Houston, Texas has an immediate opening for a Director of Biomechanics Research to apply innovations in Biomechanics to the development of new advances in Orthopedics. IORE consists of multiple research facilities
specializing in Hip, Knee, Spine and Sports Medicine research in the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical center in the world. These laboratories are dedicated to studying musculo-skeletal function and the development of innovative treatments for joint disease. As part of these efforts, IORE
is internationally active in the design and evaluation of new total joint replacements and related surgical instrumentation and procedures.
The successful applicant will work directly with surgeons, engineers, and medical students on diverse and challenging projects using advanced technologies. Areas of focus include simulation of prosthetic function during functional activities, 3D visualization of joint motion before and after total
hip or knee replacement, and kinematic analysis of surgical procedures. Opportunities exist for travel for all personnel in presenting research and collaborating on international research teams.
Professional duties will include the:
* Management of numerous projects from industry-funded testing and implant and instrument design, to academic research and federal grant-funded studies.
* Supervision and management of several engineers, visiting students, medical students, and support staff.
* Collaboration with surgeons, residents, fellows, and other engineers in performing research studies.
* Preparation of grants and funding requests for NIH and other government granting agencies, national and international foundations and industrial sponsors
* Submission and publication of abstracts and manuscripts for conferences and peer-reviewed journals.
Projects include, but are not limited to:
* The design and development of surgical instrumentation and prototype implants.
* Development of computer visualization and simulation software routines.
* Experimental and theoretical research studies in biomechanics and/or biomaterials.
* Development of experimental testing devices, including hardware and software.
Qualifications:
* An MS or PhD (preferred) in mechanical/biomedical engineering, or an equivalent qualification.
* Some prior project or lab management experience, preferably in orthopedics.
* Experience in the preparation of research grants for submission to government agencies (preferably NIH)
* Previous success in writing and publishing articles in peer-reviewed journals.
* Working knowledge and experience with mechanical equipment and electronics is advantageous.
* Experience in MATLAB programming (or equivalent application) and/or CAD is highly advantageous.
* Knowledge and experience in research design and analysis is preferred.
* Enthusiasm for work in R&D and an interest in orthopedic biomechanics is essential.
* US citizenship, permanent residence, or a valid work visa is required
