The iMBE is hosted by the faculties of Engineering and Biological Sciences. The School of Mechanical Engineering is one of the top five research intensive departments in the UK while the Faculty of Biological Sciences is the largest research unit within the top ten in the UK (2008 research assessment exercise). iMBE is one of the top ten bioengineering research institutes in the world focusing on orthopaedic joint replacement and tissue substitutions, spinal biomechanics and tissue engineering in muscular skeletal and cardiovascular systems.
The 4 studentships will be based within the Faculty of Biological Sciences. These studentships form part of a larger programme of work and are in the areas of:
* Basic cartilage tribology and wear debris
* Engineering of natural cartilage substitution biomaterials
* Tissue engineering of meniscus
* Biology of the functional spinal unit; towards tissue engineering of natural replacements
You should hold a good first degree (first or upper second class degree or equivalent) or an MSc degree in a relevant Biological or Multidisciplinary Science and should be eligible for EPSRC awards.
These PhD Research Scholarships are available from October 2009. The studentship will provide maintenance at the EPSRC rate of £12,940 per annum and full fees for UK students or EU students with three year's UK residence. These studentships are only open to UK/EU applicants.
