OPEN POSITION:
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is
pleased to announce an opening for a post-doctoral Engineer, with an
emphasis in Biomechanics, to join its Toxicology and Molecular Biology
Branch (TMBB), in the Health Effects Laboratory Division (HELD),
Morgantown, WV, USA. This is a three-year fellowship with the potential
for renewal, under the direction of Robert G. Cutlip, Ph.D. Dr.
Cutlip's laboratory has been actively studying skeletal muscle injury,
adaptation, mal-adaptation, and aging. Our laboratory is currently
studying the effects of repetitive loading and aging on muscle response,
gene expression, histological changes, and protein expression. This
vacancy focuses on biomechanical modeling of skeletal muscle response,
and investigation of adaptive and mal-adaptive biological pathways in
skeletal muscle in response to acute and repetitive loading.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
This member of the Musculoskeletal Pathomechanics Research Team (MPRT)
will: (a) provide leadership for TMBB research efforts that emphasize
skeletal muscle mechanics, (b) conceptualize hypothesis driven research
studies, (c) lead junior staff in equipment maintenance and calibration,
biomechanical data collection, reduction and interpretation, and
software development, (d) contribute to peer-reviewed abstracts and
manuscripts, and (e) act as biomechanics liaison for the Branch.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate will have a Doctoral degree in Biomechanics,
Kinesiology, Bioengineering, or a related field, and an undergraduate
degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
Experience is needed in biomechanical analysis of skeletal muscle and
related biological tissues such as bone and cartilage. Familiarity with
MatLab and Labview software will be particularly helpful. Also
desirable are familiarity with muscle modeling and finite element
analyses.
FACILITIES:
There are two state-of-the-art MPRT research laboratories, which occupy
over 1600 square feet and focus on in vivo animal testing and
post-processing of tissue and blood products. The laboratory also has a
dedicated animal quarters. The NIOSH research campus in Morgantown is
adjacent to the West Virginia University Medical Campus; metropolitan
areas in Pittsburgh and Washington DC are within a one and three hour
drive, respectively. Lakes, streams, and rolling hills add to the
