  • Job Opening: Sr. Biomechanical Engineer (Computational) - JohnsHopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU APL)

Senior Biomechanical Engineer (Computational)-- The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL)

The Biomedicine Business Area at APL is currently working on a number of innovative research programs ranging from the development of human models for investigating injury thresholds under dynamic loading to the development of neurally controlled prosthetic limbs. We form interdisciplinary project teams to address the critical challenges of our sponsors, drawing from the depth and breadth of expertise around the Laboratory, across the University, and with outside technical organizations.

The Biomechanical engineer will provide computational support for Biomechanics and Injury Mitigation Systems (BIMS) Program focused on understanding human body response to blast, ballistic and automotive impact.

    JOB DESCRIPTION:

The selected Biomechanical Engineer will be responsible for:
    * Computational human model development including finite element mesh development, material model optimization, and contact algorithm selection.
    * Modeling and simulation of blast, ballistic and automotive impact loading events on component and full human models leading toward model validation.
    * Computational modeling of the effects of bone augmentation in support of surgical planning.
    * Support of experiments used for computational model validation.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Required:

    * MS degree in biomechanics, mechanical engineering, or a related field.
    * Minimum of 5 years experience in computational experience (e.g. Finite Element Analysis).
    * Demonstrated experience with structural human body models, mesh development, material model optimization, contact algorithm selection, and model validation against experimental data.
    * Engineering knowledge in viscoelastic materials, impact dynamics and signal analysis required.
    * Demonstrated proficiency in LSDyna.
    * Theoretical knowledge of data acquisition systems coupled with demonstrated data processing and analysis techniques.
    * The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
    * Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    * US Citizenship - Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information, which includes US citizenship.

    Desired:

It is desired that candidates possess knowledge and experience in blast physics and loading mechanisms, computational fluid dynamics, and injury metrics; biological tissue testing; familiarity with anthropomorphic dummies and SAE data collection; Data visualization (MATLAB) or equivalent programming experience. Also desired is experience in clinical biomechanics and/or computer assisted surgical planning.

    SPECIAL WORK CONDITIONS:

Candidate will be expected to assist with biological tissue testing, which will require the strict observance of biohazard safety procedures.
Some travel to test sites and conferences.

    SECURITY:

Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information, which includes US citizenship.
