The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) is seeking a world leader
in research on the sensory motor system and its disorders to hold the
position of Director of the Sensory Motor Performance Program (SMPP).
The Sensory Motor Performance Program (SMPP) at the Rehabilitation
Institute of Chicago (RIC) is a group of 15 laboratories, devoted to the
study of fundamental mechanisms underlying normal human motor activity,
and their disturbances in neurological and musculoskeletal disorders.
Towards this aim, research is driven by the tight collaboration between
groups of scientists specializing in diverse topics relevant to
rehabilitation. Faculty members have appointments in the Feinberg
School of Medicine and the McCormick School of Engineering & Applied
Science, which are both part of Northwestern University. Several
faculty also hold appointments in other regional Universities, including
the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), and the Illinois Institute
of Technology (IIT)
The Director will help guiding the research programs of SMPP faculty
with particular emphasis on mentoring and promoting career development
of newly appointed faculty and staff. S/he will assist faculty with
development of research themes, guide grant submission, and identify
appropriate funding targets. The Director of the SMPP is charged with
growing the scientific activities of the SMPP and is also responsible
for related administrative functions within the SMPP, including staff
supervision and financial accountability. The director will be part of
the senior leadership team within RIC research.
S/he will also be expected to establish a strong individual research
program within RIC space, funded by federal or other sponsors. It is
expected that the successful candidate holds a doctorate in engineering,
neuroscience, medicine, or related discipline. S/he must be a proven
performer in research, and a recognized leader within either the
academic community, industry or government entities, who has
successfully led a comprehensive biomedical or health-related research
organization.
A competitive compensation package commensurate with experience will be
offered to the successful candidate. The Director of SMPP will be
qualified to hold full professor rank within Northwestern University
Feinberg School of Medicine, in the Department of Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation. In addition, a substantial start-up package appropriate
for an established research leader will be provided, including
appropriate space, funds for equipment purchase, and for hiring
collaborating faculty, support staff, and research assistants.
