• Salary range: Level A $51,895 - $70,424 p.a. - minimum starting
salary for
appointee with PhD will be $65,607 p.a.
• Plus 17% superannuation
• Salary range: Level B $74,132 - $88,033 p.a.

The School of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Western
Australia hosts a
wide range of biomedical engineering research programmes, including
work on
biomaterials, medical prosthetics and medical imaging. The appointee
will work on
an international project that is investigating the wear and damage of
dental crowns
and natural teeth. The work is already informing the design of the
next generation of
crowns and other dental replacement materials. The next phase is to
apply this
knowledge to understand the nature of fracture in natural teeth and
the effects of
wear on the fracture mechanisms. Collaborators in the project include
dentists,
anthropologists, materials scientists, biologists and engineers in
Australia and the
USA.
The appointee will work in collaboration with Professor Mark Bush
(UWA), Dr Brian
Lawn (NIST) and other collaborators on an ARC Discovery Project
investigating the
wear and fracture of teeth and replacement materials. In particular,
the appointee will
lead the development and conduct of experimental work (on models of
teeth or actual
teeth) and the application of simulation software to analyse and
predict the observed
behaviour. The appointee will join a team that includes another
postdoctoral staff
member, honours students, PhD students and several international
collaborators. We
are seeking a person with an interest in biomedical research and with
experience in
laboratory techniques for the preparation of test specimens and
measurement of
fracture and other mechanical properties. Knowledge of the
capabilities of finite
element simulation is desirable but extensive experience is not
necessary. The
successful candidate must be willing to relocate to Perth. Some
assistance with
relocation expenses (if applicable) may be negotiated.
