The 3rd international conference on the development of Biomedical Engineering in VIETNAM, January 11 – 14th, 2010



1. BACKGROUND


Vietnam is an economically and socially dynamic
country, and interest in biomedical engineering activities has grown
considerably in recent years. The traditions, environment, and
conditions within the country offer unique opportunities for
international community, and the Vietnamese government and
university policymakers are aware of the importance of this field
for the development of the country. This conference constitutes an
international platform to exchange experiences, support and
collaborations in research, education and entrepreneurship to
address the urgent needs of Vietnam.

 

2. HISTORY

In
January 2004, under the sponsorship of the U.S. National Science
Foundation, a U.S. delegation that consisted of Biomedical
Engineering professors from different universities in the United
States, visited several universities and research institutions in
Vietnam to assess the development of this field. The delegation
proposed a five year plan and enthusiastically recommended the U.S.
and international scientific communities to actively develop
collaborations with Vietnam (for more information:

In
this framework, in July 2005, the First International Conference on
the Development of Biomedical Engineering in Vietnam was held in Ho
Chi Minh City, emphasizing on developing research, education and
entrepreneurship in Vietnam. From that conference a Consortium of
Vietnam-International Universities was created. It advises and
assists the Vietnamese universities in the development of Biomedical
Engineering. It is also a magnet to attract Vietnamese descendants
from abroad (for more information:

In July 2007, the Second International Conference on
the Development of Biomedical Engineering in Vietnam was held in
Hanoi. The most important event was that Vietnamese Association of
Biomedical Science and Engineering was endorsed by the Asia-Pacific
International Molecular Biology Network (AIMBN), Biomedical
Engineering Society Singapore (BESS), International Federation for
Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE), Societe Francaise de
Genie Biologique et Medical (SFGBM) and IFMBE Working Group on
Asia-Pacific Activities.
 


3. MAIN ORGANIZER


Recently, International University (IU) a member of
the Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City, one of the most
famous university networks in Vietnam has created its Biomedical
Engineering Department. IU is the first and unique public university
in Vietnam that teaches all courses in English and was created as a
new model to modernize the higher education in Vietnam. IU has
selected Professor Vo Van Toi, a Vietnamese American who was a
professor in Biomedical Engineering of Tufts University (U.S.) and a
director of the Vietnam Education Foundation, a U.S. federal agency
devoted to higher education for Vietnam, as the chairman of the BME
Department.  
 



4. INVITATION


The theme of this year conference is: “New
frontiers in Biomedical Engineering”. We are inviting you to be
part of this conference to present your latest results and to set a
direction to further the development of biomedical engineering in
Vietnam. You can give a talk, initiate a special interest session
and/or organize a tutorial session on a special topic to improve
knowledge in this field or to help people of different background to
convert into Biomedical Engineering We solicit all
interdisciplinary works, which links life and health sciences to
engineering and basic sciences, and covers from molecular to upper
levels and from methodology to instrumentation.
The official language is
English.

 


5. PURPOSES





1.

To give Vietnamese educators, students, researchers,
administrators and policy makers the opportunity to learn about the
related works and models in the U.S. and elsewhere, and to present
their accomplishments



2.

To give international scholars the opportunity to
learn of Biomedical Engineering activities in Vietnam for future
collaborations; and to give US professional institutions (IEEE,
AIMBE, etc.) opportunity to explore the possibility to establish BME
chapters in Vietnam.



3.

To develop the relationship between international and
local industry, and to motivate further development of BME in
Vietnam.



4.

To provide a forum for young
Vietnamese scientists to exchange and discuss their
experiences and results from their studies, training, and
research activities of Biomedical Engineering and related
fields.
