Post-doctoral Fellowship in Heart Valve Biomechanics
The Cardiovascular Native and Engineered Tissue Biomechanics Lab has an opening for the following NIH grant funded position starting immediately:
This is a 2-3 year research position with a focus on the biomechanics of adult heart valves with congenital malformations. In particular, we plan on focusing on the bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) and the associated pathology of the aortic apparatus (i.e. the sinus, root, and valve leaflets). We propose to exploit our experimental and simulation capabilities to perform a comprehensive dynamic analysis of tri-leaflet aortic valve (TAV) and BAV in realistic geometries including the valve root and the sinuses. For the BAV, Our approach will utilize patient specific BAV geometry and an indepth knowledge of BAV tissue micromechanics, directed towards realizing our long-term goal of developing "valve anatomical shape markers" that identify BAV patients at greater risk for valve degeneration. When it is fully developed and validated, the proposed approach can potentially be used to inform the risk management process. The long-term goal of this project is thus to develop an understanding of the correlation between specific anatomical markers and normal and bicuspid aortic valve function. A knowledge base will be developed that will provide the clinician a basis for informed application of treatment modalities. Interested candidates should write the undersigned with a curriculum vitae, the names of two references, a summary of their research interests, and date of availability.
