Centre for Medical Engineering Solutions in the Management of Osteoarthritis
Post-Doctoral Research Associate in Orthopaedic Robotics
Salary in the range: £30,360 to £38,730 per annum
Applications are invited for a Research Associate to work on a 3-year project to conduct research into human joint biomechanics using robotic methods. The post will be based in the Medical Engineering Group of the Mechanical Engineering Department of Imperial College London, which has a long record of work in biomechanics and mechatronics, particularly development of joint prostheses and surgical robots.
The Research Associate will be involved in a project to commission and then use an industrial robot as an instrument for evaluating the load-bearing functions of human joints. It is anticipated that this work will interact with surgical navigation and robotics systems at the collaborating hospital, and also with the gait and image analysis facility, so that clinical data about joint mechanics and the effects of surgery may be reproduced in-vitro, using the robot to discover internal load actions, etc. This work will require a range of skills, including advanced software development, robot control, kinematic and structural analysis, practical engineering construction, and interaction with a wide range of disciplines, including orthopaedic surgeons, radiologists and physiotherapists. There will also be opportunities for some work as a teaching associate within the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
Applicants should have a PhD (or equivalent) in surgical robotics, orthopaedic biomechanics or related area and a first degree probably in Mechanical Engineering. In addition some background demonstrating multi-disciplinarity is desirable. Good written and oral communication skills are essential.
Informal e-mail enquiries may be made to Professor Andrew Amis at a.amis @ imperial.ac.uk or +44 (0)20 7594 7062.
Our preferred method of application is online via our website (imperial.acuk/employment) (please select "Job Search" then enter the job title or vacancy reference number, EN20090174, into "Keywords"). Please complete and upload an application form as directed. Please note you must submit an application form for our posts not just a CV, if you do not fill in an application form, your application will not be considered.
Alternatively, if you are unable to apply online, please contact Ms C Ferguson, Academic Administrator at e-mail address: c.r.ferguson @ imperial.ac.uk to request an application form, quoting reference number EN20090174 in the request.
Closing date: 31st October 2009.
