Research Studentship Opportunity - Computational modelling of realigning knee
osteotomy
Our vibrant modern University has ambitious plans for its future. Our two
main campuses in Cambridge and Chelmsford are being transformed with major
capital investments, including the construction of our Postgraduate Medical
Institute at the Rivermead Campus in Chelmsford. With an annual income of
£120m, 25,500 students and 2,000 staff, we are a major force for higher
education in the East of England.
The Medical Engineering Research Group of our Department of Computing and
Technology, based at the Rivermead Campus in Chelmsford, works with the close
collaboration of orthopaedic and vascular surgeons from a number of local and
international hospitals and medical companies to bring engineering solutions
to medical problems. Our Medical Engineering Research Group has secured £300k
of Science and Research Investment Fund for capital equipment to enhance
Biomechanics research. We are offering a PhD studentship in the computational
modelling of different high tibial osteotomy techniques to bring further
understanding to the pathomechanics of knee osteoarthritis and to predict the
performance of different surgical knee reconstruction techniques to correct
lower limb malalignment. The Department of Computing and Technology has a
suite of high performance engineering work stations with CAD CAM, Medical
Image processing, and FEA software that are essential for this project.
The project would suit an exceptional graduate in Mechanical Engineering,
Biomedical Engineering and other related engineering disciplines. Applicants
should hold a Masters degree awarded by a UK University, or an overseas
Masters of equivalent standard, provided that the Masters degree included
training in research and the execution of a research project. Applicants who
hold a first or upper second class degree may also be considered. Students
for whom English is not their first language must meet our required minimum
level of English language proficiency (IELTS 6.5 in all skills, or
equivalent). The successful candidate, who will become a full time research
student, will be expected to have good communication skills and undertake
some administrative duties. The successful candidate will train for a PhD,
jointly sponsored by the Chelmsford Medical Education and Research Trust and
our University, and will be paid a stipend of £12,000 per annum plus fees
paid (UK & EU), subject to six month progress review. The stipend is not
subjected to income tax under the current regulations. Overseas Applicants
are welcome to apply but are required to pay the difference between the Home
/ EU fees and the overseas rate. This is a 3 years fixed term exciting
opportunity to join our developing research group. The start date for this
project is February 2010.
