  • POST-DOCTORAL POSITION IN OPTICAL COHERENCE TECHNOLOGY, extension

    Dear All,
Please, note that the following call has been extended and is open by 30 Nov, 2009

POST-DOCTORAL POSITION IN OPTICAL COHERENCE TECHNOLOGY

The Department of Physics and Mathematics, University of Eastern Finland, invites applications for a post-doctoral position in Optical Coherence Technology. The appointed person is to carry out mainly experimental research in Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and its application to characterization of tissues.

QUALIFICATIONS: Doctoral degree required in physics, medical physics, optics, or related field; specialization in OCT or its medical applications is an advantage. The doctoral degree should not have been obtained more than five years before accepting the post-doctoral position in question. In this context, the 5 years refer to a net period of time, which does not include maternity leaves, parental leaves, or military service, etc. Furthermore, preference will be given to candidates with expertise in characterization of musculoskeletal tissues, such as articular cartilage. Specific skills that would enhance a candidate's application include significant hands-on experience required in precision machine design and fabrication, setting up and using table-top optical/optoelectronic systems, microscopy, electronics, electro-magnetics, and LabVIEW programming for control of custom machines.

APPOINTMENT: This is a two year position and the applicant will work at both Kuopio and Joensuu Campuses of the University (see http://www.uef.fi/english/valikko/index_4.html, http://www.joensuu.fi/englishindex.html and http://www.uku.fi/english/ ).
The salary will be based on the salary system of Finnish Universities and the position is placed on level 5 of the job demands level chart for teaching and research staff, i.e., the basic salary is EUR 2578.53 per month. In addition to this sum, the salary will include a personal work performance component, which may comprise a maximum of 46.3% of the basic salary. The post-doc project is integrated within 2 research lines of the department: (1) Photonics led by Academy Professor Jari Turunen at Joensuu, and (2) Biophysics of bone and cartilage, led by Professor Jukka Jurvelin at Kuopio. The candidate will interact with the researchers from these research lines. Therefore, multidisciplinary and team qualities are essential.

APPLICATION AND APPOINTMENT DATES: The position will be filled as of 1 January 2010. The application with the required appendices should be delivered to the Registry of the University of Joensuu (Kirjaamo, P.O. Box 111, FI-80101 Joensuu, FINLAND) no later than on 30 November 2009 by 16:15 (Finnish time). Candidates must be legally eligible to work in Finland at the time of employment.
The application should contain the following documents:
    1. Summary (1-2 pages) of the background and qualifications of the candidate relevant to the research topic.
    2. Curriculum vitae.
    3. List of publications.
    4. Names of two persons from whom recommendations may be requested.
For further information, please contact Professor Jukka Jurvelin (jukka.jurvelin@uef.fi).
