Vision and Mission of the Center
Vision of the Center is to create lifelong musculoskeletal health, emphasizing physical activity and exercise. The mission of the Center is to excel in the creation of new knowledge in all areas relevant to the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries and head injuries and their long-term sequelae. The goal is to translate that new knowledge into optimal societal health, enhanced quality of life, functional mobility, and longevity.
The Center was established in 2007 by a generous gift from the Judy and Fred Wilpon Family Foundation and is a partnership of leaders and researchers from the School of Medicine, School of Kinesiology, College of Engineering, School of Public Health, and University of Michigan Health System. Fifty-nine faculty are currently members of the Center with expertise including clinical research, musculoskeletal tissues, biomechanics, epidemiology, injury prevention, and acute and chronic injury/disease management.
Job Description and Responsibilities
The Director provides leadership and assumes responsibility and accountability for the overall strategic and operational planning to realize the Center's mission. Specifically, the Director is responsible for:
* Fostering, promoting, and integrating collaborative scientific research at the University of Michigan related to the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries;
* Articulating the vision and setting priorities for continued evolution and growth of the Center;
* Attracting federal, non-federal, and private funding, both long- and short-term, for financial sustainability of the Center;
* Increasing the visibility of prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries at the University of Michigan and externally;
* Seeking, establishing, and sustaining working relationships, nationally and internationally, with other leading investigators and organizations in prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries;
* Developing scientific and public educational opportunities through the sponsorship of conferences, seminars, outreach programs, visiting professors, newsletters, and web/social media in prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries;
* Chairing the Strategic Planning Committee, comprising members from University of Michigan faculty, to assist in the continuing development and operation of the Center;
* Creating an annual detailed budget for the Center and administering Center funds;
* Providing effective policy and strategic advice to the Center's Executive Committee;
* Maintaining his or her own independent research program.
Staff
The Director is in charge of the Center's accounting/clerical, communications/marketing, fund raising, and research staff. Through on-going research projects, the Center also supports a variety of trainees in fields related to musculoskeletal injury prevention and rehabilitation.
Annual Review and Reporting
The Director reports directly to the Executive Committee of the Center. The Executive Committee includes the Dean of the Medical School, the Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs, the Dean of the School of Kinesiology, and the Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. The performance of the Director and the Center is reviewed annually by the Center's Executive Board.
