    Faculty Position in MIE



    The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at THE UNIVERSITY OF

    MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST, invites applications for a tenure track assistant

    professor in the broad areas of sensors and actuators, embedded systems, and
    cyber-physical systems, ideally with an emphasis in hardware. The new
    faculty is expected to contribute transformative and innovative ideas to one
    or more departmental research themes including bioengineering, health care
    delivery systems, and energy systems, and is encouraged to grow the already
    strong ties between MIE and other departments across the university
    including Electrical & Computer Engineering, Computer Science, and
    Kinesiology.



    The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering has 23 full-time
    faculty members, close to 100 graduate students, and over 500
    undergraduates. The research expenditures exceed $5M/year in diverse areas
    including Design and Systems, Ergonomics, Thermal Fluids and Energy,
    Materials, Manufacturing, and Operations Research. The Department is home
    to the Massachusetts Center for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy and
    the UMass Amherst Wind Energy Center.



    UMass Amherst, the flagship campus of the University of Massachusetts
    system, is a national research university recognized for superb faculty,
    outstanding teaching, and top-notch students who come from throughout New
    England and around the world. Amherst is located 90 miles from Boston and

    175 miles from New York City. Amherst was recently voted as the top college
    town in North America.



    Applicants must have a Ph.D. in a mechanical engineering discipline (degree
    by February, 2011) or a closely related field. Candidates should provide
    the following in their application package: (1) statement of interest,
    teaching and research qualifications, description of research goals and how
    candidate's expertise would add synergy to existing departmental and
    university strengths; (2) current curriculum vita; (3) one research article;

    (4) full contact information for at least four references; and (5) a brief
    abstract for seminar to be presented if invited for an interview. Review of
    applications will begin on November 17, 2009, and continue until a suitable
    candidate is identified.
