Thanks to everyone who replied there were some great anwers that broke the spell of confusion. Particularly liked the idea of imagining the whole earth accelerating a 9.81m/s. Strange thing is not the spell is broken it's so obvious I can't see why I was confused in the first place. Ah well embarassment for a moment saves stupidity for life eh?
Now I just have to think what scenario resulting in CoM at vertical constant velocity, I.E. constant vertically applied force on the force plate over a period of time, would happen during the stance phase of gait. We were thinking about the actions of perturbations in the saggital plane progression.
