Here at Leeds, we have a new new exciting job opportunity.
This new research position is being funded by SpineFX through the Marie Curie Initial Training Network. You will work in the Institutes of Medical and Biological Engineering (iMBE) and Engineering Thermofluids, Surfaces and Interfaces (iETSI) within the School of Mechanical Engineering, University of Leeds. An important aspect of the post is that you will collaborate with Prof. Philippe Zysset, Technical University of Vienna and the other partners within SpineFX including, most notably, BoneSupport. As such you will be a member of a multidisciplinary team working on an exciting new project characterising bone and vertebrae from a range of pathologies with a focus on spinal insufficiency fractures. The project involves the utilisation of imaging and laboratory based human cadaveric models to investigate the morphological and biomechanical alterations that occur in vertebrae affected by disease principally osteoporosis and metastatic bone disease and assess the use of vertebral augmentation and adjunct techniques in alleviating the structural deterioration in the bone. Further, through collaborating with the Prof Philippe Zysset, Vienna Technical University, you will seek to characterise the tissue level properties of bone altered by disease. You will be expected to be attend a number of training events delivered by SpineFX partner organisations.
You will have, an excellent undergraduate degree in engineerng or physical sciences. Research experience gained through an MSc or other higher degree would be advanatageous. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential, as is a willingness to work flexibly and travel to collaborating Partners. It is expected that the successful applicant would register for a PhD. Under the Marie Curie ITN eligibility criteria, which are put in place to encourage mobility, applicants who are nationals of the UK (per this post), will NOT be considered. Further, candidates should within four years of their undergraduate degree award at the start of the position.
Each ESR will have a Personal Career Development Plan, designed with the supervisor at the beginning of the fellowship, covering training needs (including complementary skills) and scientific objectives. You will be expected to have at least one secondment to one of the non-UK partners.
You will satisfy the eligibility requirements for an Early Stage Researcher under the European Commission Framework 7 Early Stage Training Scheme; in particular, they should be eligible to be appointed as an Early Stage Researcher in the UK - this means:
• Less than four years research experience and must not possess a PhD.
• To not be a national of the United Kingdom (there are two exceptions:
researchers with more than one nationality can be recruited if they have not resided in the UK during the previous five years; researchers who have legally resided and have had their principal activity (work, studies, etc) in a third country for at least three out of the last four years).
• To not have resided or carried out their main activity in the UK for more than twelve months in the three years immediately prior to their recruitment. Salary: Grade 6 (£24,152 - £28,839 p.a.)
