PhD position Clinical Biomechanics – Mechanisms of pathological gait

The Laboratory for Movement Analysis of the University Children’s Hospital
Basle in collaboration with the Department of Clinical Morphology and
Biomedical Engineering of the University of Basle (Switzerland) is accepting
    applications for a PhD position.

In the research project titled 'General principles of pathological gait for
improving patient evaluation and optimising treatment strategies' a PhD
position is available that will focus on the biomechanical aspects of full
body 3D gait analysis in patients and healthy subjects. The aim is to define
general compensatory gait mechanisms unrelated to specific pathologies and
    to draw conclusions regarding
compensatory gait strategies during normal and pathological gait. The
approach encompasses retrospective research of our gait analysis database as
well as prospective research by using motion capture methods including
kinematics, kinetics and electromyography with a full body biomechanical
    model.

The successful applicant should possess a Master's degree in Human Movement
Sciences, Sports Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering,
or a closely related discipline with a genuine interest in rehabilitation
medicine and movement analysis. Preliminary experience in 3D gait analysis,
computational biomechanics, and Matlab programming are advantageous.

The project is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) and the
position will be available from 1st August 2010 or by mutual agreement and
will last for three years. The PhD candidate will be co-supervised for
his/her thesis by Prof. Reinald Brunner and Dr. Jacqueline Romkes of the
University Children’s Hospital Basle and the Department of Clinical
Morphology and Biomedical Engineering of the University of Basle.

Applications in English should be made electronically to Prof. Reinald
Brunner (reinaldbrunner@sunrise.ch) including a complete CV and an
accompanying letter detailing the applicant's motivations, his or her
previous experience, relevant skills and the names of two references.
