The Pediatric Bone Health Research Group, under the direction of
Professor Heather McKay, in the Centre for Hip Health and Mobility and
Faculty of Medicine, UBC, is actively seeking outstanding and motivated
trainees who are interested in graduate studies at the PhD level. One
fully funded position is available beginning as early as May or
September 2010.
We are well known for our randomized controlled and prospective research
trials that address the role of environmental (physical activity,
nutrition) and biological (sex, ethnicity, maturity) factors on
children's bone mass, geometry and structure, microstructure and
strength. We are also well versed in a number of imaging systems that
include dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), peripheral QCT (pQCT)
and high resolution (HR)-pQCT. Finally, a hallmark of our research has
been to translate research outcomes into programs and policy that
benefit children's health (knowledge translation).
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to train with a
world-class interdisciplinary team in a supportive trainee environment
(http://www.hiphealth.ca). Collaborators on current projects include BC
Children's Hospital (paediatric orthopaedics), University of Victoria
(psychosocial health), University of Calgary (bone biomechanics and
FEA), to name a few. We will work with the successful candidate to
leverage external scholarship support.
If you are enthusiastic, a team player and have an excellent academic
background in a related area (bone biology and physiology,
bioengineering, bone health, children's physical activity) please be
encouraged to apply. Although experience with DXA, pQCT and HR-pQCT
systems is an asset, training on these instruments can be incorporated
as part of the training program.
