The Center for Ergonomics and College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at
the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in collaboration with the Human
Movement and Balance Laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh is seeking a
highly motivated graduate student to study shoe-floor friction related to
slip and fall accidents. We are seeking a doctoral student that has a solid
engineering background and is interested in working in a highly
interdisciplinary environment. While attaining the degree, the student will
develop a strong background in mechanical and industrial engineering, as
well as a knowledge base in ergonomics and biomechanics. Applicants with
laboratory experience are particularly encouraged to apply.
The research will be part of a CDC funded research project to develop a
computational model of shoe-floor-contaminant friction towards prevention of
slips and falls. The graduate student will work under the supervision of
Kurt Beschorner, Ph.D. (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee) and Mark Redfern,
Ph.D. (University of Pittsburgh).
The Center for Ergonomics at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is a new
state-of-the-art facility, which houses 8,000 square feet of
multi-disciplinary research laboratories. The facility operates under the
supervision of five faculty members and works on a wide array of
government-funded and private industry projects. The facility includes a
gait analysis laboratory, tribology laboratory, imaging and materials
laboratory, a spine biomechanics laboratory, an upper body biomechanics
laboratory and a general ergonomics laboratory.
The Human Movement and Balance Laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh
has strong expertise in studying human balance related to fall accidents.
This research group has performed ground-breaking research on the
contributing factors to slip and fall accidents for over 15 years.
The selected applicant will receive a living stipend of $20,778 per year in
addition to a tuition waiver and benefits. Interested applicants should
