Postdoctoral Research Scientist in the Biomechanics of the Right Ventricle
This is a 2-3 year research position, open immediately, with a focus on the biomechanics of the right ventricular myocardium and its alterations under normal and pulmonary hypertensive conditions. Central to this position will be 1) measurement of the multi-axial mechanical properties of actively contracting right ventricular myocardium, 2) development of a computational implementation of a constitutive model for remodeling myocardium. The long-term goal of this project will be to develop an understanding of the relation between local myocardial wall stress and functional changes in right heart myocardium due to the onset and progression of hypertrophy. The position will be jointly mentored by Michael Sacks, PhD, John A. Swanson Endowed Chair in Bioengineering, and Marc A. Simon, MD, MS, Assistant Professor of Medicine. This research effort will be part of our overall research focus in the characterization and modeling of the structure-function-biomechanics of native and engineered cardiovascular soft tissues. This work aims to utilize and integrated experimental/multi-scale finite element approaches. In addition, a particular strength will be the ability to work directly with Dr. Simon and others of the academic clinical cardiology section, as well as the CBL and affiliated faculty and students.
Applicants should have completed a PhD or MD/PhD in Biomedical Engineering or related field, including Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Applied Physics. A strong interest in both experimental and computational biomechanics is highly desired. Interested candidates should write the undersigned with a curriculum vitae, the names of two references, a summary of their research interests, and date of availability.
