    PhD Opportunity at The University of Western Australia

    The School of Sport Science, Exercise and Health at the University of
    Western Australia are seeking applications from recent graduates in
    biomedical engineering, exercise science or equivalent with an Honours
    Degree (2A or Higher), Masters Degree, or equivalent to undertake full-time
    research towards a PhD degree. Assoc Prof David Lloyd and colleagues have
    been successful in securing continued Australian National Health and Medical
    Research Council funding to study the relationship between mechanics of gait
    and the development of knee osteoarthritis in people with ACL
    reconstruction. The candidate will work in a team of post doctoral fellows
    and other PhD students.

    The PhD candidate position can commence in April-June 2010, and offers a
    SIRF grant (to cover tuition fees) with an annual living stipend of $26,000
    (tax free), for a period of 3.5 years. Applicants can be Australian or
    International Students. A background in gait analysis, biomechanics and/or
    orthopaedics is desirable, with some proven research experience.

    The School of Sport Science, Exercise and Health has a long established
    record in the area of Neuromusculo-Skeletal Biomechanics and is one of the
    premier departments of its type internationally. The research by Assoc Prof
    David Lloyd and colleagues is involved with understanding outcome paths
    after knee replacement surgery, factors involved in the development and
    prevention of knee osteoarthritis, and the causation and prevention of knee
    injury. The biomechanics group is exceptionally well equipped with 2 motion
    analysis laboratories each with a Vicon MX motion analysis system, AMTI and
    Kistler force plates, multi channel EMG systems, Biodex Isokinetic
    Dynamometers, Ultrasound and high performance workstations. Software
    packages used in the group are SIMM, OpenSim, Mimics Image Analysis suite,
    Matlab, Body Builder, with C/C++ and Fortran compilers for custom
    programming. Mechanical and electronic technical support staff are available
    for equipment development.
